The Palmist said, “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.” (Psalm 119:114)
And a contemporary songwriter wrote these words based on that verse, “You are my hiding place. You preserve me from trouble. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance. Whenever I am afraid I will trust in you. Let the weak say “I am strong in the strength of the Lord.” 1
It is the Lord’s joy to do all of that for us. It is his joy when we know that he is our inner hiding place, and that we can go there any time we need to or want to. It is his joy to fill our hearts with songs of deliverance from whatever tempts us to think that somewhere else is our hiding place. It gives the Lord joy when we trust in him instead of letting our fear take us somewhere else. It is his joy when we allow his strength to make us strong. His strength undergirds us when we are broken-hearted. His strength and love heal us.
When we know all that, then we can say, and understand what it means to say, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” OR turned around, “The strength of the Lord is my joy.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
When we have a deep wound in our heart, Jesus the hiding place, brings comfort first of all. Remember to retreat to Him inside your heart when you feel anguish, broken-heartedness, anger. Remember that instead of thinking you have no place to go to.
No matter how deeply we have been wounded, the ONLY place that can bring us true relief is Jesus, our hiding place. Go there. Enter your hiding place in your heart where Jesus is, and you will find a healing balm, respite from the storm, and a safe place where you can let go into the Lord.
And the Lord will embrace you and hold you for as long as you want to remain. No one else needs to know you have visited your hiding place. It is intensely personal and private.
And you know what? The Lord is waiting and ready and with great empathy and love to embrace you, strengthen you, and heal you. It is his joy to do that.
This week, visit your hiding place where Jesus is. Then take on the scripture “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Say it several times through the coming week. And see what happens.
