Celebrate Jesus in Your Hearts

birth of jesus christmas Dec 24, 2020

Our beloved Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke that we love listening to at Christmas begins with these words:

“In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered.”

Today as I’m reading this familiar passage, my eyes keep coming back to the words “In those days…”  What was happening back then just as God was preparing the Messiah to be born?  The Romans had conquered the Holy Land and had subjugated the Jewish people to Roman Rule.  We know that Augustus was the Roman Emperor and Quirinius was governor of Syria.  We know that the government had just issued an edict for all of the population to be registered.  This Census would have been quite an undertaking.  I mean, they had no computers, no electronics, no internet.  Just paper and something to write with.  And this was the first time that anyone had required such an event.  It must have created quite a stir, causing people to travel to their original home town to register.

And yet, quietly, in the midst of all that, God was causing another stir that would rock the world, their world and ours:  the Messiah, the Savior of the world was being born.

“In those days…”  Hmmm…  What is happening “In our days…?”  We are under the grips of a pandemic, which has caused mayhem, from those who contract the virus, to those who suffer from the quarantine isolation, to those who've lost jobs.  We have just had a presidential election, with accusations of fraud and vote recount after vote recount being called for.  Our country is politically polarized.

And yet, quietly, in the midst of all that, we are being reminded again to make room in our hearts for the birth of the Messiah.  Invite Jesus into your hearts again and again.  Let Him warm your hearts with joy, praise and thanksgiving.

Merry Christmas to everyone!  Celebrate Him in your hearts!
